Finally upgraded to WordPress 2.3

I know it has been out for a while, but I never got around to upgrading to the new version of WordPress. Today, in a fit of productivity, I got around to upgrading. For me, the best upgrades are the ones in which I don’t notice any difference. I can’t feel any difference between this upgrade and the previous version. This is good. I’m sure if I look, for differences, I’ll find them. But why? I trust the geeks who put some hard work into writing WordPress. It’s much more than I’m capable of doing.

OK, so the only noticeable difference is this new Tags box.

Morning Sickness

One of the sad parts of being with a pregnant woman is the morning sickness. Unfortunately, there is nothing I can do. There is no hack that’s going to make it go away. Drugs are out of the question. It’s just me and the kids for the first couple months until Mrs. Mata’s sickness goes away. We’ll see her crawl out of the bedroom once in a while between meals and naps. Otherwise, we shall miss her.

Experimenting with a DV camera

I got a hold of a DV camera and got a firewire cable off eBay recently. I’ve been playing around with video as of late. What I like about using a regular camcorder is that the quality of the video is better than the other camera that records direct to a memory card.

I like that I don’t have to worry so much about running out of memory. I know that I can swap out memory cards. Somehow it’s not the same as swapping out DV cassettes. On top of that, there is no comparison when it comes to video quality.

I also recently purchased a tripod for the camera. Hopefully this will cure the shaky camera syndrome. Even if it’s a “cheap” Wal-Mart tripod, I know it will help me quite a bit.

  • Which is better, kids getting injured from playing outdoors or fat with carpal tunnel syndrome playing video games indoors? #

It’s Official. Success, she is with passenger.

Alma went to visit our family doctor today. She had a slight cause for alarm, so I went with her. I just want to mention that it’s official, the doctor has pronounced her pregnant. He whipped out the sonogram to check it out and showed us the gestational sack. You can’t see anything other than a little bubble on the thing; but parents eat that sort of thing up. We walked out with a fuzzy black and white image with a circle in the middle. We came out of there with some vitamins and magazines to accompany our sonogram (or is it sonograph?).

We ran the numbers. We are going to be in our early 50s by the time this kid leaves the house. That gives us a meager 10 years to enjoy being single again before retiring. In all, we’ll have over 30 years of parenting experience when this is all over. Parenting can be so joyous and depressing at the same time. This is a lesson that I was attempting to teach my daughter today. Most things worth having tend to be a royal pain. You only subject yourself to problems for things that you really want. This is true with children, sports, careers, art, or whatever. Success at something is a real pain in the ass. Of course, I would say that in a kid-safe way.

Recent Job: Setting up BlackJack Phone With Exchange Server

This week I got a quick job to set up a Samsung BlackJack phone operating on the AT&T network with an Exchange server. If you’re not familiar, the BlackJack uses Windows Mobile. I was surprised that the phone’s operating system is generally the same, but different enough from my T-Mobile Dash that it seems foreign. One noticeable difference is that the Internet sharing feature is buried in the Windows folder on the BlackJack, as if to keep users from connecting their computers to the web via their phones.

We had problems at first because the user had to change the password on Exchange so that we could connect the phone. We logged into the Exchange webmail service, changed the password, and then used the new password to get the phone operating. Afterwards, I instructed the user on some of the features of using mobile email, scheduling, and other features. In all, it took an hour, mostly due to fumbling with the password problem.
